1 October 2001, 10:39 US Stocks Post Solid Gains
A surprising rise in the Chicago
purchasing management report calmed economic worries over the September
11 attack and helped U.S. share prices post solid gains Friday. The Dow
Industrials rose 166.14, or 1.9%, to 8847.56, while the Nasdaq Composite
gained 38.09 to 1498.80. The S&P 500 rose 21.56, or 2.1%, to 1040.17,
cutting back its losses since the attack to 4.7%. Volumes were heavy,
raised in part by quarter-end portfolio positioning.
