Berlin, Sept. 5 (BridgeNews) - The number of unemployed in Germany in August for the first time this year fell in seasonally adjusted terms, down 2,000 from the previous month, compared with a unrevised monthly rise of 11,000 in July, the Federal Labor Office said Wednesday. The unexpected fall compares with a Bridge Fokus Deutschland survey of economists, which forecast a rise of 17,000 in pan-German seasonally-adjusted unemployment.
In western Germany, the number of seasonally adjusted jobless in August rose 5,000 on the month, compared with an unrevised rise of 10,000 in July.
In eastern Germany, the August figure was down 7,000, compared with a unrevised rise of 1,000 in July.
In non-adjusted terms, German unemployment in August fell to 3.789 million people compared with 3.799 million people in July. Western German jobless reached 2.446 million in August, compared with 2.445 million in July.
Eastern German jobless in August reached 1.342 million, compared with 1.354 million in July.
The August unemployment rate for the total German civilian work force was unchanged at 9.2% compared with July.
In western Germany, the total unemployment rate in August was also flat at 7.3% compared with the previous month, while the eastern German rate fell to 17.1%, compared with 17.3% in July. All August data is provisional.
