5 September 2001, 08:50  Japan Q2 non-financial companies parent pretax profit up 1.0 pct yr-on-yr

TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - The parent level pretax profit of non-financial companies in the second quarter rose 1.0 pct year-on-year, compared with a flat figure for the previous quarter, the Ministry of Finance said.
The ministry provided the following second quarter year-on-year breakdown for non-financial companies, compared with the previous quarter:
Total:
Parent pretax profit - up 1.0 pct vs flat
Capex - up 2.3 pct vs up 2.5
Manufacturers:
Parent pretax profit - down 21.2 pct vs up 18.0
Capex - up 10.5 pct vs up 22.6
Non-manufacturers:
Parent pretax profit - up 17.1 pct vs down 10.5
Capex - down 1.8 pct vs down 5.8
Earlier, private sector economists forecast parent pretax profit in the second quarter of between a fall of 4.5 and 11.7 pct, with capex forecast at between a rise of 0.7 and 2.8 pct.
