3 September 2001, 10:15 Shiokawa - Japan to discuss dollar/yen issue with O'Neill at APEC
TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Minister of Finance Masajuro Shiokawa said he
will discuss a problem caused by the current strong yen against the
dollar with US Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill early September, when
finance ministers of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum meet
in Suzhou, China.
"I am planning to meet with O9Neill at an APEC meeting early
September to ask him how the US is seeing the recent dollar/yen moves,"
Shiokawa said in a local TV show.
"And on the occasion I will tell him what Japan is wanting other
major economies to do to cope with (the recent strong yen against the
dollar) in the global cooperative framework," he said.
He also said "G7 member countries are seeing the recent yen's rise
against the dollar as too fast. None of them are supporting the current
dollar/yen moves. So we believe the dollar/yen will turn around some
time in the future."
The remarks came after he instructed Haruhiko Kuroda, vice finance
minister, to contact with G7 member countries last Friday to "confirm
whether they are seeing the current dollar/yen level as normal".
Shiokawa also said: "I was very shocked when I saw the Nikkei stock
average fall below 11,000 points, because I was expecting the weak yen
against the dollar would help Japan's trade balance improve."
