26 September 2001, 11:06 BoJ's Hayami concerned over decline in dollar/yen
TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Bank of Japan governor Masaru Hayami said he is
concerned over the decline in the dollar/yen, adding that investors'
allegiance towards the US currency must not be lost.
"It is bad if the dollar falls," Hayami told reporters at the Prime
Minister's official residence. "I am concerned that the dollar is
falling. We must avoid losing the market's allegiance to the dollar."
Hayami declined to comment on his feelings towards the dollar's
recent slide to low 117 yen levels, after attending a meeting of the
government's Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy.
"I told members of the council that there will be no problem at the
end-September book closing," he added.
