21 September 2001, 13:36 US economy in for soft landing in spite of attacks - Trichet
PARIS (AFX) - The US economy is in for a soft landing in spite of
the repercussions from the attacks in New York and Washington, said
Bank of France governor Jean-Calude Trichet.
In an interview published in Le Parisien newspaper, he said that,
"before the attacks we were at a stage in the US economy which had all
the signs of a soft landing, and my work remains based around that
hypothesis."
Speaking on the effect on France of the US attacks, Trichet said
that a measured reaction would allow growth to be preserved in France
and Europe. "We must continue to put our projects into effect, to
invest and to consume. The struggle against terrorism depends on our
viligance and calmness," he said.
