18 September 2001, 15:07  BoE cuts repo rate to 4.75 pct from 5.00

LONDON (AFX) - The Bank of England said its Monetary Policy Committee has cut its repo rate to 4.75 pct from 5.00 pct. The move follows yesterday's 50 basis point cuts by the US Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, the Bank of Canada, the Swiss National Bank, Sweden's Riksbank and the Danish Central Bank. It comes despite BoE governor Eddie George's comment last week that a concerted round of rate cuts is unlikely. This is the first time since its creation in 1997 that the MPC has made an inter-meeting cut. It is next due to meet on Oct 4. The MPC will release the minutes from its September meeting tomorrow.
