12 September 2001, 08:30  Japan stocks end morning down 5%, breach 10,000 level

Tokyo, Sept. 12 (BridgeNews) - Japanese shares ended the morning session steeply lower with shares facing heavy selling across the board as investors rushed to cash out of the market after terrorist strikes in the U.S. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average fell 519.24 points, or 5.0%, to 9773.71. It was the first time the index had breached the key 10,000 level since August 1984. The Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) fell 51.89 points or 4.9% to 1,006.23, after temporarily cutting below the 1,000-mark.
