31 August 2001, 14:57  Fabius says forecast of 2.3 pct French GDP rise shows resistance to slowdown

BERLIN (AFX) - The forecast of 2.3 pct GDP growth in France this year by statistics institute INSEE shows that France is resisting the global slowdown, Finance Minister Laurent Fabius said at a Franco-German economic summit here. Fabius predicted that GDP growth in France next year will be "somewhat over" the 2001 level. The rise in the unemployment rate to 8.9 pct in July from 8.8 in June, announced today, does not change the better employment trend, he said.
