Paris, Aug. 31 (BridgeNews) - France's unemployment rate based on International Labor Organization definitions rose in July to 8.9% of the workforce from 8.8% in June, the French Labor Ministry said. Economists had forecast an unchanged rate.
Based on ILO definitions, which omit persons who worked at all during the month, the number of jobless in June rose a seasonally-adjusted 2.4%, or by 57,000 to 2,372,000, compared with a rise of 31,000 in June. Because the ILO calculation excludes anybody who worked during the month, its measurement base is smaller than the base used by the Labor Ministry. According to Labor Ministry figures the number of category 1 jobseekers in France (those having worked less than 78 hours during the month) rose by 40,000 or 1.9% to 2,116,700
