28 August 2001, 08:54 Home sales fall as hiring slowdown spreads to service sector
New York, Aug. 27 (BridgeNews) - In two more pieces of downbeat news,
sales of existing homes fell more than expected in July, and a Manpower
Inc. (MAN) survey of employers' hiring intentions show weakness in
employment in manufacturing has spread to the service sector. Sales of
previously occupied houses and apartments fell 3.0% in July to a
seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.17 million, but analysts had expected
sales to remain essentially unchanged, slipping to 5.30 million homes from
5.33 million in June.
