Washington, Aug. 23 (BridgeNews) - New claims for U.S. state
unemployment insurance benefits rose 8,000, to 393,000, in the week ended
Saturday, the U.S. Labor Department announced. That is slightly above the
390,000 median estimate of analysts surveyed by BridgeNews. The 4-week
moving average rose 6,750 to 378,750.
Analysts surveyed by BridgeNews put initial jobless claims for the
latest week in a range of 370,000 to 400,000.
For the week ended Aug. 11, initial claims slipped 3,000 to a
seasonally adjusted 385,000, originally reported as 380,000, Labor said.
For the same week, the 4-week moving average for new claims was 372,000,
originally 370,750 per week.
In new data for the week ended Aug. 11, continuing claims climbed
131,000 to a seasonally adjusted 3.182 million, the highest level since
September 1992.
For the same week, the four-week moving average for continuing claims
increased 28,500 to 3,073,000, also its highest level in nearly nine
years.
The seasonally adjusted rate of insured unemployment during the week
ended Aug. 11 rose to 2.5% from the previous week's 2.4%. The ratio
represents people claiming benefits as a percentage of the workforce
potentially eligible for these benefits.
Data on continuing claims and the insured unemployment rate are
reported with a one-week delay.
