FRANKFURT (AFX) - The European Central Bank can only cut interest rate once the trends in euro zone inflation and M3 money supply growth become clearer, Bundesbank vice-president Juergen Stark said in an interview with Wirtschaftswoche. "While inflation is declining, money supply is growing. We now have to examine whether this is a trend or whether it is only a short term development. Only then can we think about further interest rate moves," Stark said. Regarding German growth, Stark said that although recession is "improbable," growth in 2001 will only be slightly over 1 pct. "Growth this year will be only slightly above 1 pct," he said. Stark also said that any possible softening of the EU stability pact would come up against massive resistance at the ECB. "If there are attempts in other countries to water down the stability pact, this will come up against massive ECB resistance," he said.
