20 August 2001, 08:38 UK CBI says manufacturing pay kept in check by global pressures
LONDON (AFX) - UK manufacturing pay awards continue to be
overshadowed by rises in the service sector, according to the latest
Confederation of British Industry survey.
The survey shows that manufacturing pay settlements stayed at 2.9
pct in the three-months to July, while service sector pay awards
averaged 4.6 pct compared to 3.9 pct in the previous quarter.
CBI's head of economic analysis, Sudhir Junankar, said : "Clearly
it's a tale of a two-speed economy."
He believes that relatively low manufacturing pay settlements
reflect a major downward pressure on prices, coupled with the impact of
global slowdown.
"Coming on top of recent official figures which showed inflation
under control we remain confident our data do not put the government's
inflation target at risk," he added.
The sharp rises in service sector pay were influenced by a batch of
high awards in May among professional services firms that have
relatively small numbers of employees.
The CBI believes the impact on average earnings as a whole will
therefore be limited.
