The Redbook Average for U.S. same-store sales rose 0.1% in
August, compared to July, through the week ended August 11, putting
sales ahead of the target of -0.2%, according to Instinet Research with
sales of department stores. The same-store sales index rose 2.4%
seasonally adjusted compared to the same week a year ago, and also saw a
2.4% for the whole month compared to August of last year. "Sales were
mixed in the first week, but above plan overall," Instinet said in it's
weekly report. "August is a four-week month and, like July, is somewhat
transitional, characterized by final summer clearances and the shift in
inventory to back-to-school merchandise and fall apparel."
