1 August 2001, 14:26 Euro Zone May retail sales down 0.1 pct vs April, up 0.5 pct yr-on-yr
BRUSSELS (AFX) - Euro zone retail sales fell 0.1 pct in May from
April, while they were up 0.5 pct year-on-year, the EU's Eurostat
statistical office said.
In the EU 15, retail sales were stable in May from April but were
up 1.5 pct year-on-year, Eurostat said.
In the euro zone, textiles, clothing and footwear rose 0.7 pct in
May from April, and grew 0.10 pct from a year earlier, it said.
Euro zone food, drink and tobacco sales were down 0.4 pct in May
and were up 0.2 pct year-on-year, while household goods sales fell 0.6
pct in May and were down 1.0 pct year-on-year, it said.
In the EU 15, textiles, clothing and footwear rose 0.9 pct in May,
and gained 2.9 pct year-on-year, it said.
EU 15 food, drink and tobacco sales fell 0.3 pct in May and rose
0.8 pct year-on-year, while household goods sales fell 0.7 pct in March
and rose 0.5 pct year-on-year, it said.
On a monthly basis, the volume of retail trade fell 4 pct in
Portugal, and 1.1 pct in Germany, while positive growth rates were seen
in Ireland, up 1.2 pct, the Netherlands, up 0.8 pct, and the UK, up 0.7
pct, it said.
Retail sales rose on a yearly basis in all member states where data
was available, except in Germany, down 2.0 pct, Italy, down 2.0 pct,
and Portugal, down 0.3 pct, it said.
The sharpest yearly growth rates were posted in Ireland, up 7.7
pct, and the UK, up 7.0 pct, it said.
