Frankfurt, July 5 (BridgeNews) - Economic slowdown in Germany and the world continued to clearly affect the labor market in June, Federal Labor Office President Bernhard Jagoda said Thursday. The number of unemployed in Germany in June rose way above forecasts by a seasonally adjusted 22,000 from the previous month, compared with a monthly rise of 18,000 in May. As western German economy is more dependent on exports, labor market there was stronger affected by global economic slowdown, Jagoda added.
In western Germany, the number of seasonally adjusted jobless in June rose 14,000 on the month, compared with a monthly rise of 12,000 in May. In eastern Germany, the June figure was up 8,000, compared with a rise of 6,000 in May.
In seasonally-adjusted terms, German unemployment in June totaled 3.852 million people compared with revised 3.831 million in May, while in western Germany seasonally adjusted unemployment reached 2.478 million from a revised 2.464 million in May. Total June eastern German unemployment stood at 1.375 from 1.367 million the month earlier.
In non-adjusted terms, German unemployment in June totaled 3.694 million people compared with 3.721 million people in May.
Western German jobless reached 2.380 million in June, compared with 2.385 million in May.
Eastern German jobless in June reached 1.314 million, compared with 1.336 million in May.
The June unemployment rate for the total German civilian work force declined to 8.9%, compared with 9.0% in May.
In western Germany, the total unemployment rate in June was unchanged versus May at 7.1%, while the eastern German rate was 16.8%, compared with 17.0% in May.
The seasonally adjusted and standardized unemployment rate used by Eurostat for compiling euro-zone and EU-15 statistics was unchanged in June compared with May at 7.8%, the labor office said.
The large difference in standardized and non-standardized unemployment rates reported by the German labor office and Eurostat is the result of different definitions used by each office.
