Paris, July 31 (BridgeNews) - France's unemployment rate based on International Labor Organization definitions rose in June to 8.8% of the workforce, the French Labor Ministry said. Economists had forecast an unchanged rate at 8.7% even though they expected the total number of jobless to rise due to a slowdown in business confidence and a more cautious approach by managers towards hiring (See table .6658).
Based on ILO definitions, which omit persons who worked at all during the month, the number of jobless in June rose a seasonally-adjusted 1.3%, or by 31,000 to 2,339,000 compared with a decline of 5,000 in April. Because the ILO calculation excludes anybody who worked during the month, its measurement base is smaller than the base used by the Labor Ministry.
According to Labor Ministry figures the number of category 1 jobseekers in France rose by 8,500 or 0.4% to 2,077,100.
