25 July 2001, 10:30  UK's Straw rules out an autumn euro campaign

LONDON (AFX) - Jack Straw, the foreign secretary, said the government will not campaign for euro membership until after an economic assessment suggests the UK should adopt the European single currency. This assessment of the government's five economic tests that may not be completed until June 2003, Straw said in an interview in the Financial Times. He said that if the government recommends euro membership after assessment of the five tests, there will be legislation to allow a referendum and then a campaign. Asked if the government will make a sustained case for euro membership before the economic assessment is published, Straw said: "We have made up our minds on the principle. "But we have got to make - as a first decision - we have got to make a judgment in the UK's interests on the basis of the five tests... "By definition the highest profile part of the campaign would be when and if we decide to recommend we should join the euro." However, Straw insisted a euro referendum could be won during the current parliament.
