25 July 2001, 10:11 Buba says German inflation has 'probably' passed its peak
FRANKFURT (AFX) - The Bundesbank said inflation in Germany has
probably passed its peak after data showed a moderation in June from
May.
Writing in its July monthly report, the Bundesbank said the main
reason for the drop in the prices was a fall in energy prices and in
particularly the prices of mineral oil.
"Price pressure on the consumer level as measured by the year on
year rate has probably passed its peak," the Bundesbank said.
The Bundesbank noted inflation fell to 3.1 pct year on year in June
from 3.5 pct in the previous month.
Preliminary data today showed German July inflation moderated
further in July to a rise of only 2.7 pct year on year and 0.1 pct
month on month.
Leading euro zone monetary policy makers, including Bundesbank
president Ernst Welteke had expressed doubts the moderation in
inflation so far this summer would mark the start of a trend.
