24 July 2001, 09:37  Japan June dept store sales up 2.4 pct yr-on-yr vs down 0.4 in May

TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Department store sales in June were up 2.4 pct year-on-year, compared with a fall of 0.4 pct in May, due to increased operating days and solid demand for seasonal products, the Japan Department Store Association said. The biggest riser was for "personal surroundings" products, which rose 8.4 pct, followed by food, up 4.4 pct, and cafe and restaurant receipts, up 4.3 pct. The largest decline was household products, which fell 6.7 pct, followed by "others", down 3.9 pct.
