WASHINGTON (MktNews) - Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan will
testify Tuesday before the Senate Banking Committee on monetary policy
issues.
Greenspan is scheduled to testify at 10:00 a.m. EDT. He is expected
to be questioned on both monetary and fiscal policy as well as the
condition of the U.S. economy.
Greenspan testified on monetary policy last week before the House
Financial Services Committee.
A Senate Banking subcommittee is to hold a hearing Wednesday
morning on the economic risks of a growing U.S. balance of payments
deficit. Former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, former Fed chairman
Paul Volcker, William Dudley, managing director Goldman Sachs, and
Stephen Roach, managing director of Morgan Stanley are scheduled to
testify.
The House and Senate also are to continue work on the fiscal year
2002 spending bills this week. Only 2 of the 13 annual spending bills
have cleared both chambers of Congress.
The Senate is expected to work on the transportation and
agriculture spending bills this week. The House is expected to take up
the foreign operations, Treasury-Postal and perhaps VA-HUD spending
bills.
The House Budget Committee will hold a hearing Wednesday morning on
overhauling Medicare.
A House Financial Services subcommittee plans to hold a hearing
Thursday on overhauling deposit insurance.
And, the House Rules Committee is to hold a hearing Wednesday on
biennial budgeting.
