24 July 2001, 09:31 Forecast - France , June consumer spending on manufactured goods
Release Tuesday, July 24, at 6:45 GMT
Median High Low Responses May Apr
SA mfg spending (% m/m): 1.0 2.7 -0.1 24 -0.5 -0.5
SA mfg spending (% y/y): 2.9 4.6 1.7 24 1.9 3.5
Comments: Most analysts expect a sharp rebound in spending after
two months of decline. Adjusted large store sales surged 3.8% on the
month and department store sales alone were up 4.5%. New car sales were
even stronger.
Despite recent slippage, consumer confidence and buying propensity
remain relatively high and households can draw on rising earnings and
accumulated savings. Good weather and the launch of summer retail
discounts at the end of the month may also have encouraged shopping.
