20 July 2001, 12:47  G8 SUMMIT Berlusconi says summits must change in light of security problems

GENOA, Italy (AFX) - Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said G8 summits will have to change because of the security problems and violence affecting them and does not rule the possibility that the G8 summit beginning here this afternoon will be the last, according to local press reports. "Let's see," La Repubblica quoted him as responding when asked if the three-day summit could be the last ever. "Certainly, with all that's happening, with all these problems of the security of the delegates, citizens, journalists, because of the displays of violence, something will have to change," he said after meeting with trade union leaders. Berlusconi said that at next year's gathering, "if there is another G8 summit, all the leaders, not just the host, will meet with union representatives". G8 leaders will meet amid tight security controls as masses of anti-globalisation protestors are expected to converge here.
