London, July 20 (BridgeNews) - For the first time since April 2000, U.K. retail sales volumes failed to show any monthly growth in June, coming in unchanged from May but rising 5.6% on the year. The data issued by the Office for National Statistics showed, however, that sales values continued to rise on the back of increases in food prices, with retail sales values climbing 6.9% on the year.
Food stores saw sales volumes rise 0.3% on the month in June, but this was offset by a 0.3% fall in mainly non-food stores. In the non-food sector, only the textile, clothing and footwear section showed any monthly growth, with sales volumes up 0.1% and 10.4% on the year. Reflecting the pick-up in food prices, the retail price deflator, a measure of retail sector inflation, was up 1.5% on the year, the largest rise since May 1998.
"Overall, the figures indicate annual price increases in the food sector with continuing price falls in the non-food sector, although at a slightly slower pace than in May," the ONS said.
