Frankfurt, July 11 (BridgeNews) - Germany's trade surplus in May rose above analysts' forecasts to reach a provisional 14.8 billion Deutsche marks, compared with an revised 10.6 billion-mark surplus in April, according to data released by the Federal Statistics Office in Wiesbaden Wednesday. The German May current account also came in higher than expected to show a surplus of 1.3 billion marks, compared with an revised 3.9-billion-mark surplus in April.
BridgeNews and Bridge Fokus Deutshcland survey among analysts predicted a 8.5 billion Deutsche marks trade surplus and a 2.3 billion marks current account deficit.
Germany's exports grew 4.8% on the year in May to 106.9 billion Deutsche marks (54.7 billion euros), while imports decreased compared with May 2000 by 1.5% to 92.1 billion marks (47.1 billion euros).
Over half of all German trade was with countries of the European Union, with exports rising 0.7% on the year to 57.6 billion marks, and imports increasing 2.1% from May 2000 to 52.8 billion marks.
German exports to countries outside of the European Union rose 10.1% on the year to 49.3 billion marks, while imports fell 5.9% to 39.3 billion marks, the statistics office said.
In the first five months of this year, exports have risen 12.2% to 522.2 billion marks (267.0 billion euros), while imports were 10.4% higher than in the same period a year ago at 458.1 billion marks (234.2 billion euros).
