WASHINGTON (AFX) - The US Senate approved 6.5 bln usd in
supplemental government spending, channeling the bulk of the money to
national defense programs favoured by President George Bush.
The bill, which covers new government expenses for the remainder of
the current fiscal year ending Sept 30, also contains 100 mln usd for
an international fund to fight AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.
Senators voted for the administration's request 98-1.
The House of Representatives has passed its own version of the
bill, which now has to go to conference committee.
Most of the money -- 5.9 bln usd -- will be allocated for military
training, maintenance and other readiness programs as well as nuclear
weapons projects run by the Department of Energy.
