7 June 2001, 16:18  Japan Q1 non-financial companies parent pretax profit flat yr-on-yr

TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - The parent level pretax profit of non-financial companies in the first quarter was flat on a year-on-year basis, compared with a rise of 31.9 pct the previous quarter, the Ministry of Finance said.
The ministry provided the following first quarter year-on-year breakdown for non-financial companies, compared with the previous quarter:
Total:
Parent pretax profit - flat vs up 31.9
Capex - up 2.5 pct vs up 7.1
Manufacturers:
Parent pretax profit - up 18.0 pct vs up 37.1
Capex - up 22.6 pct vs up 10.4
Non-manufacturers:
Parent pretax profit - down 10.5 pct vs up 27.8
Capex - down 5.8 pct vs up 5.7
Earlier, private sector economists forecast first quarter pretax profit would come in at around a rise of 7.0-9.1 pct.
