29 June 2001, 11:48  IMF sees Germany 2001 budget deficit 2.0-2.25 pct of GDP - report

FRANKFURT (AFX) - The International Monetary Fund is set to forecast a German budget deficit of 2.0-2.25 pct of GDP for 2001, compared with the government's projection of 1.5 pct, the Financial Times reported without naming sources. A Commission official in Brussels familiar with the issue said an increase in Germany's budget deficit this year would be met "with great concern", adding that such a development would lead the Commission to demand additional savings measures from Berlin. The IMF will also cut its GDP growth projection for Germany to 1.3 pct from 1.9 pct, the FT said. An IMF delegation is due to publish its projections in a new country report on Germany in July or August, the newspaper said.
