29 June 2001, 11:45 Shiokawa - Sharp rise in dollar/yen will be a problem, hopes will be stable
TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Finance Minister Masajuro Shiokawa said a sharp
rise in the dollar/yen will be a problem and that he hopes for stable
currency levels.
"I think a sharp rise in the dollar will be a problem and I hope
the dollar/yen will move stably," Shiokawa told a regular briefing when
asked whether further easing by the Bank of Japan will increase
downward pressure on the yen.
"I hope the BoJ will ease further its monetary policy to correct
the current level of prices because falling prices due to dumping of
retail goods is not good," he added.
"If unemployment reaches a critical situation, the government needs
to consider additional spending as a countermeasure," Shiokawa added.
