25 June 2001, 13:25  UK May new house building up 6 pct yr-on-yr

LONDON (AFX) - UK applications to build new homes rose to 13,398 in May, an increase of 6 pct compared with May 2000, according to National House-Building Council (NHBC). Private sector starts increased by 1 pct from last year to 12,107, while housing association applications totalled 1,381, up 68 pct during the same period. New completions for both the public and private sector totalled 12,887, a fall of 5 pct compared with last year. An average of 535 new homes were sold each day during May, a reduction of 6 pct on the same month last year. "The recovery in May registrations seems to confirm that bad weather conditions were largely responsible for the drop in house building activity earlier this year. However, cumulative registrations in the first five months of the year were well down on the same period last year," NHBC chief executive Imtiaz Farookhi said.
