21 June 2001, 13:04 US's Lindsey:Yen May Decline if Japan Restructures- Nikkei
WASHINGTON (MktNews, Wednesday) - Top White House economic adviser Lawrence
Lindsey said Wednesday the yen's value may alter as a result of
structural economic reforms, but repeated that the United States does
not support yen depreciation as a means to boost the economy.
"If the government of Japan undertakes restructuring and, as a
result, the market moves the yen up or down, then we recognize it as a
market-driven and not a government-driven decision. So that will be
fine," Lindsey told the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.
But he repeated that this does not mean "it is appropriate for
Japan to simply depreciate the yen as a way of solving its economic
problems."
