20 June 2001, 10:52  Japan May trade surplus 80.1 bln yen vs 575.0 bln

TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - The trade surplus in May fell to 80.1 bln yen from 575.0 bln the year before, the Ministry of Finance said. Total exports fell to 3.815 trln yen from 3.85 trln last year, while imports rose to 3.735 trln from 3.28 trln.
The ministry provided details of the surplus, exports to and imports from the following regions, with year-on-year comparisons:
U.S.:
Surplus - 390.6 bln yen, down 15.9 pct
Exports - 1.11 trln yen, down 1.7 pct
Imports - 720.1 bln yen, up 8.2 pct

EU:
Surplus - 151.6 bln yen, down 32.3 pct
Exports - 616.9 bln yen, down 2.0 pct
Imports - 465.4 bln yen, up 14.7 pct

Asia:
Surplus - 43.22 bln yen, down 84.1 pct
Exports - 1.60 trln yen, down 1.4 pct
Imports - 1.56 trln yen, up 15.2 pct
