Washington, June 14 (BridgeNews) - New claims for U.S. state unemployment insurance benefits fell 12,000 to 428,000 during the week ended Saturday, the U.S. Labor Department said. That was slightly above the 425,000 median estimate of analysts surveyed by BridgeNews. However, the four-week moving average rose 9,000, to 424,500, the highest since August 1992, as initial claims in the previous week were revised sharply higher. * * *
The estimates of analysts surveyed by BridgeNews put initial jobless claims for the latest week in a range of 416,000 to 435,000. For the week ended June 2, initial claims rose 21,000 to a seasonally adjusted 440,000, the highest since July 1992. New claims for the week were originally reported at 432,000, Labor said. For the same week, the four-week moving average for new claims was 424,500, originally 413,500 per week. In new data for the week ended June 2, 2.935 million people were reported claiming unemployment benefits under regular state programs, down 53,000 from the previous week's revised 2.988 million, Labor said. The four-week moving average for the week for continuing claims rose 63,000 to 2,867,250, the highest level since December 1992. The seasonally adjusted rate of insured unemployment during the week ended June 2 was steady at 2.3%. The rate represents people claiming benefits as a percentage of the workforce potentially eligible for these benefits. Data on continuing claims and the insured unemployment rate are reported with a one-week delay.
