28 May 2001, 17:59 France's Jospin calls for 'economic government' in euro zone, tax harmony
PARIS (AFX) - Prime Minister Lionel Jospin said he favours an
"economic government" for euro zone countries, proposing that: "Each
member country consult first with its partners, taking into account
their recommendations, before taking any decision that would have
consequences for the entire zone."
In a speech outlining his vision of an enlarged and more integrated
Europe, Jospin also said that harmonized corporate taxes in the euro
zone are "necessary" in the long term, in order to prevent fiscal
dumping.
In addition, Jospin called for the creation of a common pool of
funds that would be used to support member countries that are
particularly hit by global economic turbulence.
