New York, May 25 (BridgeNews) - U.S. consumer attitudes on the economy were mostly weaker in May compared with the early May readings released on May 11, according to analysts familiar with the private survey released Friday by the University of Michigan.
* * * According to the survey, the reading on May consumer sentiment was 92.0, compared with 92.6 in early May, 88.4 in April, 91.5 in March, 90.6 in February and 94.7 in January. The current economic conditions index was pegged at 102.2, compared with 102.1 in early May, 98.0 in April, 103.4 in March, 105.8 in February and 107.7 in January. The consumer expectations index came in at 85.4, compared with 86.5 in early May, 82.2 in April, 83.9 in March, 80.8 in February and 86.4 in January.
The university's consumer expectations index is used by the Conference Board in its monthly leading economic indicators report.
The survey of US households used for the index began in 1946. The February 1966 consumer expectations index stood at 100.0.
