Frankfurt, April 9 (BridgeNews) - German industrial production posted a surprise rise by seasonally adjusted 0.6% in February largely due to output growth in the construction sector by 10.1%, the Finance Ministry said Monday.
However, as developments in the construction sector are generally volatile, an actually decline in manufacturing output in February on the month by 0.2% may figure more importantly.
* * * Analysts expected industrial production to have declined in February, with BridgeNews and Bridge Fokus Deutschland survey of analysts forecasting a 0.7% fall from January.
The developments in western and eastern Germany were quite similar in February, the ministry said. Western German industrial output rose 0.7% while eastern German industrial production increased 0.8%. Production in the key manufacturing sector of western German declined 0.2% from January.
In the rounded, 2-month comparison of January-February with November-December, German output was up 1.9%. Construction output declined 3.2% in the two-months comparison, while manufacturing production rose 2.7%.
Within the manufacturing sector, production of capital goods grew the strongest in January-February from November-December by 4.7%, followed by output in durable goods (+4.4%).
Production in western Germany rose 1.7% in January-February from November-December, while eastern German output increased by 2.8%.
Comparing January-February with the same 2 months a year ago and adjusted only for working days, German production was up 5.6% with western German output up 5.4% and eastern German output up 6.5%.
