6 April 2001, 15:15  GERMAN MANUFACTURING ORDERS FALL

Manufacturing orders in February fell for a second monthrunning because of weakness in domestic and foreign demandfor capital goods, official data showed. They fell 0.2% on themonth and 4.0% on the year. Orders for capital goods fell 1.2%on the month, with domestic demand showing a fall of 1.1% andforeign demand down 1.5%. A bright spot in the data was a riseof 0.7% in orders for consumer durable and non-durable goods, due entirely to stronger domestic demand, which may signal amuch hoped for pick-up in consumer spending.
