5 April 2001, 15:16 Hayami urges caution on idea to weaken yen
Tokyo, April 5 (BridgeNews) - Japan should be "cautious" in
considering proposals to intentionally guide the yen lower relative to
other currencies, the Bank of Japan Governor Masaru Hayami said. He warned
a weaker yen would cause higher import prices and have a negative impact
on Asian economies that export to Japan. Hayami added he thinks the recent
weakening of the yen is due to increased uncertainty about Japan's
economic and political outlook.
