25 April 2001, 13:00  Buba says German output rising but orders easing

FRANKFURT, April 25 - The Bundesbank said on Wednesday thatGerman manufacturing output grew at the start of 2001 while orders fell fromtheir end-2000 levels. The Bundesbank said in its April monthly report that orders in January andFebruary were down two percent from autumn 2000 with foreign orders inparticular slowing down. Manufacturing output by contrast, was up "markedly" from the final quarter of2000, the Bundesbank said. The bank also noted that while German inflation slowed in March to 2.5 percentfrom 2.6 percent, helped by a slight fall in energy prices, food price inflation had"strengthened markedly". The report was printed before the release this week of regional data for Aprilwhich economists say indicated that pan-German inflation rose to 2.9 percent --the highest since early 1994 -- from 2.5 percent in March.
