London, April 23 (BridgeNews) - The U.K. Treasury recorded a net cash requirement of 6.651 billion sterling in March, slightly better than forecasts for a deficit of just above 7 billion, according to figures published Monday by the Office for National Statistics. The March figures rounded off the financial year, which runs from April to March, and confirmed a better-than-expected outturn than the Treasury's official forecast. The cumulative PSNCR surplus for 2000-01 was 37.008 billion sterling, compared with the official forecast of 34.3 billion sterling.
* * * The public sector net borrowing requirement (PSNB), which smoothes out the returns across the year and is the government's preferred measure, in March was 3.142 billion sterling. The cumulative total for the year was a surplus of 16.480 billion sterling, compared with the official forecast for a surplus of 15 billion.
Both the PSNB and PSNCR surpluses for 2000-01 were records and far exceeded anything enjoyed by Conservative Chancellor of the Exchequer Nigel Lawson in the late 1980s.
