Japanese Finance Minister Kiichi Miyazawa reportedly said currency movements in the foreign exchange market since the middle of last week have been too rapid and are somewhat abnormal. He was quoted as saying, "We need to watch them carefully." On the Tankan, he said the results were within his expectations and he saw no need to consider further fiscal stimulus spending measures. He also said it was too early to draw conclusions about corporate capital spending from the data.
