U.S. home builders reported another in a line of strong months in March, prodded by low mortgage rates, a still robust jobs market and a tight supply of fresh product. The market was strongest in the West, where energy scares did not ward off homebuyers and may even have encouraged a few to buy newer, energy-efficient models, they say. Nasty wintry weather did hamper construction in Northern areas, but apparently did not slow orders, they add. Average 30-year fixed mortgage rates again broke below 7.0% after the second week of the month where they stayed, matching levels last seen two years ago on a sustained basis.
