Frankfurt, March 6 (BridgeNews) - The number of unemployed in Germany in February rose a seasonally adjusted 3,000 from the previous month, compared with a monthly rise of 7,000 in January, the Federal Labor Office said Tuesday.
The data is slightly above forecasts, but Federal Labor Office President Bernhard Jagoda said unemployment remained "practically unchanged" in seasonally adjusted terms. The rise of unemployment was mainly attributed to eastern Germany he said and drew particular attention to the fact of employment continuing to rise in western Germany in February.
* * * In western Germany, the number of seasonally adjusted jobless in February rose 1,000 on the month, compared with a unrevised monthly rise of 7,000 in January.
In eastern Germany, the February figure was up 2,000, compared with a unrevised unchanged development in January.
All February data is provisional.
Jagoda pointed out that one has to wait until the winter ends to see real developments in the labor market. Winter months always have a negative effect on employment, particularly taking its toll on the number of outdoor jobs.
In seasonally-adjusted terms, German unemployment in February totaled 3.779 million people compared with revised 3.776 million in January, while in western Germany seasonally adjusted unemployment reached 2.421 million from a revised 2.420 million in January. Total February eastern German unemployment stood at 1.358 from 1.356 million the month earlier.
In non-adjusted terms, German unemployment in February totaled 4.113 million people compared with 4.093 million people in January. This was the lowest number of unemployed for February since 1995, the labor office said.
Western German jobless reached 2.623 million in February, compared with 2.622 million in January.
Eastern German jobless in February reached 1.490 million, compared with 1.471 million in January.
The February unemployment rate for the total German civilian work force was 10.1%, compared with 10.0% in January.
In western Germany, the total unemployment rate in February was 8.0% compared with 8.0% in January, while the eastern German rate was 18.9%, compared with 18.7% in January.
The seasonally-adjusted and standardized unemployment rate used by Eurostat for compiling euro-zone and EU-15 statistics was at 7.8% in February compared with 7.8% in January, the labor office said. The large difference in standardized and non-standardized unemployment rates reported by the German labor office and Eurostat is the result of different definitions used by each office.
