30 March 2001, 16:00  ECB LEAVE OFFICIAL RATES UNCHANGED

The European Central Bank announced after its Governing Councilmeeting that it had left its official interest rates unchaned. Thedecision is likely to fuel speculation that the ECB will cut rates onApril 11 by at least 25 bps. Most analysts in an MNI survey expectedthe central bank to leave rates on hold today, but 31 of 37 expected arate cut by the end of April. Earlier, an ECB source, who wish toremain anonymous, told MNI that a rate cut was unlikely today afterthe stronger-than-expected M3 money supply data releasedyesterday.
