28 March 2001, 15:20  BUSH SAYS US ECONOMY 'WINDED' BUT STRONG

President Bush said Tuesday the U.S. economy is "winded butfundamentally strong," but needs "urgent" action and more than just aone-time boost to spur a recovery. The U.S. must restore "confidence andoptimism" in the economy, Bush said, noting that the government needsto "act boldly ... to build the long-term prosperity we seek." Speaking tothe Chamber of Commerce in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Bush said, "We needan immediate stimulus for our economy ... the trend is clear and the needfor action is urgent."
