22 March 2001, 11:28  Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan spoke

Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan spoke to former Vice President Albert Gore's journalism class at Columbia University Wednesday afternoon but declined to comment on the Fed's Tuesday rate cuts or other monetary policy issues, according to students who heard his closed door remarks. With the traditional blackout period in effect after Tuesday's interest rate decision, Gore steered Greenspan clear of questions on market sensitive topics, including the Fed move and recent Bank of Japan actions. Gore himself praised Greenspan in a chat with reporters after the class. "He (Greenspan) is the best at monetary policy, that I've ever seen ... and he's the best there is," Gore said.
