9 February 2001, 17:16  Japan's Aso says economy is out of worst stage

Tokyo--Feb. 9-- Taro Aso, Minister for the State of Economic and Fiscal Policy, said Friday that Japan's economy is out of its worst stage, when he was asked about recent falls in stock prices. Also, Aso did not comment on view the government plans to take at the Bank of Japan's policy board meeting Friday.

Aso, speaking at a regular press conference, said that, "I don't react to each movement (of stock prices)."
The Nikkei 225 Stock Average dropped once below the critical 13,000 in the afternoon trading session Thursday, and closed at 13,138 Thursday, its lowest level in 27-months.
Also, the government will send Takanori Sakai, State Secretary for the Cabinet Office, and Yuzo Kobayashi, director-general for Economic and Fiscal Policy, to the BOJ's policy meeting to be held today, according to Aso.
