GERMAN JAN JOBLESS RISES UNEXPECTEDLY; BAD WEATHER BLAMED
Seasonally adjusted unemployment rose by 7,000 in January due to bad
weather, the Federal Statistics Office reported. Analysts had been
expecting a fall of 20,000 instead. However, it should be noted that the
rise in unemployment was concentrated almost entirely in west Germany.
Meanwhile, employment data showed that total payrolls in November rose a
seasonally adjusted 28,000 on the month. Compared with November 1999,
employment was 542,000 higher, or up 1.4%.
