Washington--Feb. 27--Sales of new single-family U.S. homes fell 10.9% in January, the sharpest decline in seven years, to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 921,000 units. However, the decline followed a record high 1.034 million unit sales rate in December, and the sales rate was above all but five months last year. Sales were close to analysts' median expectation for 917,000 units.
* * * The January sales rate was 0.6% below the year-ago pace of 927,000, and followed a revised 14.9% increase in December. The December sales pace was previously reported at a rate of 975,000, the departments of Commerce and Housing and Urban Development said Tuesday.
The fall follows a previously reported 6.6% drop in January's annual rate of existing home sales and a 5.3% increase in January's annual rate of housing starts, the highest level since April.
